Martial Arts Opinions

Shito Ryu Kata Elements

Techniques for Shito-Ryu 'S Katas contain three very important elements:

1. Giho no Henka - There are many different techniques contained in a singular Kata. Understanding and mastering these techniques are the most important aspects of studying Kata.

2. Kisoku no Tondo - The mastering of few breathing methods.

· Choton Choto

· Choton tanto

· Tanton Choto

· Tanton tanto

· Hakei tondo

(which includes six breathing methods inclusive of those combinations of methods)Proper breathing while executing any technique is the key to mastering any movement and learning control over ones body

3. Jyushin no Ido - No technique is effective without the proper positioning of one's center of gravity. This allows one to maintain perfect balance while executing techniques

Because Shito-ryu has any katas , it gives one the opportunity to learn four techniques. It allows individuals to find the most effective techniques which are the most appropriate for them in various situations. In additon, because most Katas begin with a block, it teaches one to form a non-combative mental attitude. However, when there is an unavoidable confrontation, it is very important to be able to assess the opponent's abilities and intentions. This allows one to put themselves in the most advantageous position.

Finally, Karate's fundamental idea is " Bogyo Soku Kogeki". Literally translated, this means that after the block, one immediately counter attacks. It should be noted, however, that the Shito-ryu's idea is that the block itself is also effective as the counter attack. By executing a very strong block against the opponent's attack, one will defeat the opponent's mind and discourages his will to fight.

Shito Ryu

Shito-ryu adopted both principles from Shorin-ryu and Shorei-ryu. Shito-ryu is fast, but still powerful and artistic. It incorporates the powerful Shuri-te katas like Naifanchin and Bassai, the hard and soft Naha-te katas like Sanchin and Kururunfa, and the artistic Chinese white crane katas like Nipaipo and Paipuren. Shito-ryu is broad, still distinct. It emphasizes very much on Kihon (basics) at the beginning, but for a senior Shito-ryu student, quality and quantity run together. Shito-ryu contains all the eighteen Shorin-ryu katas, all the sixteen Shorei-ryu katas, the Chinese white crane katas, plus the katas devised by Master Mabuni himself from his broad knowledge and experiences, a total of more than sixty katas (depending on the organization). Moreover, the special charateristic of Shito-ryu which distinguish it from other school is that, Shito-ryu lives together with Kobudo (weapon arts) and sometimes Iaido (sword arts). The Kihon, Kumite, Karate katas, Kobudo Katas, Iaido katas and the principles & messages behind them made the treasury of Shito-ryu so magnetic and demanding that Shito-ryu deserves a life-long dedication to practice and perfect.

Shito-Ryiu's five principles of defense:

1. Teni

Taisabaki (footwork). Shifting or turning quickly out of the opponent's way.

2. Ryusui

Soft blocking. Redirecting a strong attack with a circular or deflecting parry.

3. Raka

Hard blocking. Striking an off-center or indirect attack with sudden maximum power.

4. Hangeki

Defense as attack. A good defense is offense.

5. Kushin

Springing. A reflexive, darting "out and in" kind of body shifting from any angle.
