IRISH KENPO KARATE UNION http://www.ikkuonline.com/
The IKKU was founded 30 years ago by Mr. Ambrose Moloney (6th Dan) and president of the association. From its original club at St Vincents sports complex in Glasnevin which is still in operation under the instruction of Mr. Paul Brennan and Mr. Paul Dawson, the IKKU has grown to one of the largest associations in Ireland with eleven clubs currently being run by approximately 30 dan graded instructors.
The average annual membership of the association is over 700.
From what was a very much a family based club in Glasnevin, Mr Moloney as chief instructor along with his wife Mrs. Ann Moloney 3rd Dan and son Stephen 3rd Dan, the IKKU has developed and grown to be a major force in Kenpo throughout Ireland and Europe. During Mr. Moloney’s time as chief instructor the IKKU squad won the European team championships for 2 consecutive years. Firstly in Jersey in 1983 and then in Germany in 1984 that was in addition to numerous individual titles in Kumite and Kata both nationally and internationally. Having dominated these tournaments he felt it was important to compete with other styles of Karate and this policy has been pursued ever since. Now members of the World Karate Confederation (WKC) the IKKU has participated at European championships 2002 and world championships 2001 and in June we returned from St. Petersberg, Russia where a squad of 11 participated in the WKC World championship. One of the squad members reached the quarter finals out of 80 competitors over four areas, narrowly being beaten by the eventual bronze medal winner.

Through the years, the IKKU has seen many changes but the underlying constant is that people can train safely and enjoy learning the art of Self defence. The association has adopted the governments recommendation on good ethics in sports and recently appointed a childrens officer Mr. David Duffy(2nd Dan) to
the executive of the IKKU.

All members of the association are invited to attend the AGM which is held in December of each year. We are constantly looking for new and innovative ideas which could benefit the associaton and the way our members train.

Some of the original students of the IKKU are still training and teaching within the association those include Mr. Paul Brennan 5th Dan (IKKU chief instructor) 28 years training, Mr Joe Brennan 4th Dan also 28 years training, Mr Pat O’Connell 3rd Dan (IKKU Public relations officer) 30 years training and Mr. Hugh Hogan 4th Dan 25 years training.

The association keeps going from strength to strength and are always welcoming new members to our clubs.
