The Nerve Pressure Point Control Tactics System was developed to help provide specific tactics that eliminate the need for peace and security officers to use excessive force in control of subjects. This is accomplished by the application of pressure to specific nerve groups in the body. It allows an officer regardless of size and strength to gain a high degree of control in close quarter confrontations with very little energy loss.
Mr. Bruce Siddle, the special coordinator for the Greater St. Louis Police Academy and Dr. James Cooper, the St. Louis Police Department Surgeon, developed the system in 1979.
There are three main application methods in the system:
· Surface Pressure
· Deep Pressure
· Striking Techniques
These three methods are used against 12 targets in the body. Seven for Nerve Motor Points and five for Nerve Pressure Points. In order for these methods to be effective, they are done in a macro concept, which means they do not have to be done with pinpoint accuracy to be effective. The Motor Targets are effective up to a 3” radius for the upper limbs and up to a 5” radius for the lower limbs. When a nerve motor point has been struck it has the potential of causing a motor dysfunction. This is temporary impairment or weakening of a muscle action, all muscle action is stimulated by nerve impulse.
All PPCT techniques have three components of acceptability needed to qualify as a state of the art defense tactic.
Tactically: effective, easy to learn, successful application by male or female.
Legally: techniques are most humane, practical and court defense on the force continuum.
Medically: only group of defense tactics that have been subject to medical research ensuring that the user is not only aware of how the techniques work but also why they work.
